Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) has once again gained international acclaim as its groundbreaking research on smart onion farming secured the Best Presentation Award at the 6th Asia Joint Conference on Computing (AJCC2025) at the Kansai Kenshu Center in Osaka, Japan, from 21-24 April.

Competing against top-tier research from across the continent, the project stood out for its innovative approach to revolutionizing agricultural productivity through smart farming technologies.

The award-winning study, titled โ€œDevelopment of Smart Technologies for Profitable Onion Production,โ€ was funded by the Department of Science and Technology - Grants-in-Aid (DOST-GIA) and presented by Mr. Jayson J. Elenzano, Associate Professor III and project member, under the leadership of Dr. Amy Lizbeth J. Rico, General Manager of SMART Agriculture Center.

The research showcased the successful integration of IoT-based monitoring systems, automated irrigation, and smart vertical farming techniques to optimize onion cultivation. Key findings revealed a 40% increase in net profitability and a 30% reduction in water usage compared to traditional layered farming methods, proving the viability of smart agriculture in enhancing both sustainability and yield.

TAU President Dr. Silverio Ramon DC Salunson congratulated Dr. Rico and Mr. Elenzano and mentioned that such an accolade not only reinforces TAUโ€™s reputation as a hub for research excellence but also sets the stage for broader adoption of smart farming solutions in the country.ย

โ€œTAUโ€™s recognition underscores its growing influence in agricultural technology and our commitment to addressing global challenges in food security and climate change,โ€ Dr. Salunson said.

Under the morning sun at the Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) Hostel Function Hall, participants gathered early for the training and team-building activities during the โ€œYoung Farmers Regional Bootcamp 2025 Harvest Through 4-H Milestone: Harnessing Agricultural Resilience through Vision, Education, Sustainability, and Technologyโ€ from 23-25 April.

The three-day intensive program blended traditional farming wisdom with cutting-edge innovations, embodying the 4-H (Head, Hands, Heart, and Health) pillars. In collaboration and active participation from agencies and government offices including the Department of Agriculture (DA); DA-Tarlac; Provincial Government of Tarlac (PGT); 4H Club; DA Agricultural Training Institute - Regional Training Center (DA ATI-RTC); DA-Regional Field Office III (DA-FRO III); Federation of Volunteer Leaders of the Philippines (FVLP), and TAU.

The event highlighted the importance of cultivating solutions for food security where participants engaged in contests designed to test the sustainable and innovative thinking of young farmers using their Heads to innovate, their Hands to build, their Hearts to serve communities, and Health-conscious approaches.

With the guidance of TAUโ€™s seasoned faculty and researchers, the young farmers incorporated the comments and suggestions during their presentation of their proposed various agricultural innovations and products.

Said bootcamp that gathered the participants from Central Luzon concluded with thunderous applause as Aurora province secured the overall championship, successfully defending their title from the previous year.

During an interview, Dr. Agnes C. Perey, Director of Extension and Training (DET), shared her profound gratitude to DA-ATI for its continuous support and collaboration with TAU through extension services. โ€œDA-ATIโ€™s partnership has been instrumental in fueling greater progress on TAUโ€™s extension and training programs. We are truly grateful for such collaborations that advance the research and agricultural development of the University,โ€ she stated.
