Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) has demonstrated its communityโ€™s collective and consistent commitment to advancing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the recently released Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2025, which evaluates institutional data from 2023.ย

Among 2,318 ranked higher education institutions (HEIs), TAU secured its position, placing within the 1001-1500 range globally, 5th in the country, 2nd in Region III, and 1st in the Tarlac Province.

With an overall score of 55.7 and submitting data in all 17 SDGs, TAU performed strongest in SDG 5 Gender Equality (ranked 301-400, globally), SDG 2 Zero Hunger (401-600), SDG 1 No Poverty (601-800), and in the only required category, SDG 17 Partnership for the Goals (1,501+).

While these operational achievements stand out, the rankings revealed opportunities for improvement especially in SDG 3 Good Health and Well-Being, SDG 4 Quality Education, and SDG 17.

This accomplishment continues TAU's established record in the said sustainability rankings. In the 2024 edition (using 2022 data), the University had ranked 801-1000 globally with an overall score of 60.9 points. Since entering in 2021 as the first-ever ranked Philippine state university, TAU has consistently excelled in poverty alleviation (SDG 1) and food security (SDG 2), areas central to its agricultural development mandate.

The University administration led by TAU President Dr. Silverio Ramon DC. Salunson has acknowledged these results as both validation and motivation. "Our rankings reflect TAU's enduring strengths in gender equality and agricultural education while clearly showing where we need to invest more resources and efforts, particularly in research productivity and more efficient and effective SDG initiatives," TAU President Dr. Salunson stated. According to his previous pronouncements, he will prioritize generating research funding, expanding industry and academic linkages, improving ICT infrastructure and systems, and continuing cleanliness and greening campaigns.ย

TAU's consistent performance is particularly notable given the increasing competition as the number of ranked institutions has grown from 1,963 in 2024 to 2,318 in 2025 with more and more PHEIs joining each year. Despite this, the University has maintained its regional reputation, continuing to serve as Central Luzon's second highest-ranked HEI.

As TAU prepares for future rankings cycles, it remains focused on balancing its established strengths in extension programs and agricultural innovation with the need to bolster research outputs and sustainability practices. The University's ability to maintain its position amid growing global participation demonstrates the solid foundation of its sustainable development initiatives and poses challenges to its leadership and stakeholders.
