CHRONICLES | TAU faculty members join seminar-workshop on AI, STEM education

Three representatives from Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) -  College of Education (CEd) participated in the Seminar-Workshop on Artificial Intelligence: Trends, Challenges and Ethics on 7-9 October at Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya.

Representing the University are Dr. Mariella Alexes R. Espiritu, Ms. Analyn Diane P. Silverio, and Mr. Ricky P. Lacson, who joined fellow educators and participants in exploring the applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Organized by the Philippine Consortium for Science, Mathematics and Technology (PCSMT) in partnership with NVSU, the three-day seminar-workshop featured discussions on the convergence of AI and STEM pedagogy, emerging technologies, and the challenges and ethical considerations surrounding AI integration in education.

The program also included sessions on STEM disciplines, curriculum redesign, institutional integration, and strategies for navigating the opportunities and challenges of AI. Hands-on workshops provided participants with opportunities to explore practical applications, including technology-stock mapping, prompt engineering, and syllabus enhancement.

Ms. Silverio emphasized AI's potential to improve service delivery and provide greater benefits to the university community and its stakeholders. “Indeed, AI is a tool that we can use to improve how we deliver our services. It is something that we can use at its maximum to yield utmost benefits to us, to our students and other stakeholders,” Ms. Silverio shared.

Meanwhile, Dr. Espiritu highlighted the responsibility of educational institutions to establish clear guidelines for AI use as the technology becomes increasingly integrated into teaching and learning. “As the use of AI becomes increasingly inevitable, educational institutions must prioritize its responsible use by guiding students through the development and implementation of standardized AI policies. Establishing clear guidelines is an essential first step toward promoting ethical, responsible, and effective AI use in education,” Dr. Espiritu said.

Mr. Lacson underscored the importance of human-centered innovation as educational institutions transitioned from Education 4.0 to Education 5.0. used to do with AI. Let us shape a future where innovation advances, human values endure, and humanity remains in control,” Mr. Lacson underscored.

Through their participation, the TAU representatives gain exposure to emerging educational approaches and tools that can support teaching, curriculum development and technology integration in the classroom.
