Dr. Silverio Ramon DC. Salunson, President of Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU), revealed that his administration is advocating to rename the institution as Tarlac Science, Technology, and Agricultural University (TSTAU). This significant transformation in the Universityโ€™s identity and direction is anchored in House Bill 2690, authored by Tarlacโ€™s First District Representative, Cong. Jaime Eduardo Marc D. Cojuangco.

While honoring its deep-rooted agricultural heritage, the University seeks to integrate science and technology into its academic framework to prepare a new generation of capable innovators and forward-looking leaders. Dr. Salunson emphasized that the rebranding reflects the institutionโ€™s clear commitment to advancing beyond its traditional foundations.

โ€œThe ultimate goal of this transition is to align the Universityโ€™s outputs with the demands of a rapidly changing world. Embracing a more comprehensive and contemporary academic model, TSTAU aspires to equip its students with the versatility and expertise necessary to succeed as professionals and contributors across diverse and high-demand fields,โ€ Dr. Salunson explained.

Filed by Cong. Cojuangco on 30 July, House Bill 2690 was presented on 1 August before members of the Committee on Higher and Technical Education (CHTE), chaired by Tingog Party List Representative Jude Acidre. Among those in attendance during the committee hearing was Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) Chairperson Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis.

In a statement released on Facebook, Cong. Cojuangco hailed the committee's approval as a "bold step toward aligning the Universityโ€™s mandate with the evolving demands of the 21st-century workforce." He highlighted recent CHEd data showing that 38% of the countryโ€™s 3.7 million unemployed are graduates, underscoring an imbalance between academic programs and market needs.

"This will empower TSTAU to offer a broader range of programs responsive to the dynamic requirements of human capital development," Cong. Cojuangco emphasized. He added that through this measure, the degrees available to Tarlaqueรฑos could finally adapt to the demands of both the local and national labor markets.

This legislative development represents a significant milestone for the institution nine years after its conversion to a State University under Republic Act 10800. The transition to TSTAU is envisioned to expand academic offerings in disciplines such as nursing, criminology, and other programs designed to strengthen a more diverse and future-ready academic portfolio.

In addition, the University aims to secure increased funding and support, positioning itself as a premier institution dedicated to sustainable development, effective governance, and relevant innovation in the Philippines.
