In the quiet intensity of the chessboard, where strategy outweighs strength and patience defines victory, Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) proudly raises one of its own, Mr. Rainier B. Valdez, a young thinker who continues to prove that success is built move by move.

At just 19 years old, Rainier already carries the poise of a seasoned chess player. Hailing from Santa Ignacia, Tarlac, he is currently a Second-Year College student in the College of Business Management (CBM), balancing academic responsibilities with the mental rigor of competitive chess. His journey into the world of black and white squares began early during his elementary years, sparked by a powerful and enduring influence of his father.

More than just an introduction to the game, Rainier’s father became his first mentor, shaping not only his skills but also his discipline, patience, and love for the sport. Their father-and-son bond, forged over countless matches and shared lessons, laid the foundation for Rainier’s growth as a chess player. It is a reminder that behind every sharp mind is often a guiding hand, one that teaches, supports, and believes

Today, Rainier continues to sharpen his strategies by actively joining various chess tournaments across the province and even in neighboring provinces. Each competition serves as both a challenge and a classroom, allowing him to refine his tactics, learn from fellow players, and represent TAU with pride and determination. For him, every match is not just about winning but also pushes him to grow.

When asked what keeps him motivated, Rainier speaks from the heart, his family. Their unwavering support fuels his drive, reminding him that success is never a solo effort. In every calculated move he makes, his family’s encouragement stands firmly behind him as proof that a strong support system is often the greatest advantage of all.

As Rainier B. Valdez continues to rise in the world of chess, Tarlac Agricultural University celebrates not only his talent but also the values he embodies which are to be disciplined, persevere, and be grateful.
