The Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) through the Guidance and Counseling Office and Student Welfare Unit (SWU) under the Office of Student Services and Development (OSSD), took a proactive stand by conducting the โRACE Against Suicide: A Gatekeeper Training for Suicide Preventionโ at the AgriTourism Function Hall on 4 December.
Select faculty members from the College of Education (CEd), Laboratory School (LS), College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), and University Nurses attended the seminar that aims to implement the following RACE protocol: Recognizing warning signs of suicide, Assessing suicide risk using the C-SSRS, Convincing the student to get help, and Entrusting to the counselor.
The training proper is led by Dr. Benny S. Soliman, Director of the Student Placement Office (SPO), who presents the core program that focuses on the essential steps of Recognize, Ask, Care, and Escort which serves as a practical framework for intervention.
โAt a time when suicide cases are becoming increasingly alarming, let us R.A.C.E. against suicideโone student, one school, and one community at a time,โ said Dr. Soliman.
โTogether, we can build a mentally resilient and compassionate university, where every individual feels seen, supported, and valued,โ he added.
This training provides a holistic approach to student welfare, ensuring that key personnel across campuses are empowered to act as a first line of defense in preserving life and promoting hope.
